Nanoclays - Exposure

In a study with workers from a Sepiolite Nanoclay production plant, it was found that lung function deteriorated more rapidly in those who had received more exposure to dust. In Asia and the US nanoclays are allowed in food packaging. Particles of packaging can migrate in small amounts in food.

There is no data available on the environmental exposure to nanoclays.

In very high concentrations nanoclays cause cell damage. In vitro studies on cell cultures with regard to genetic modification (genotoxicity) are negative.

For nanoclays, a study shows that exposure of the lungs with these particles causes only minimal and temporary lung damage.
